- Having a no stepentry. This means you do not have any stairs or steps to climb to enter or exit your home.
- Wide doorways and hallways to allow wheelchairs to pass through. Even if you do not need the assistance of a wheelchair, it is always more convenient having the wider doorways and hallways to move large things from room to room or in and out of the house.
- Walk-in or roll-in showers. A walk in shower has a floor that is flush with the bathroom floor. Again, no step up to get into the shower. Other important features for the shower are an adjustable or removable showerhead, a shower seat and a scald control on the faucets.
- Grab bars. These can be installed in and near the shower and toilet. If remodeling a home, the walls can be reinforced for installation.
- Lighting features. Replace light bulbs with a higher wattage bulb. Add task lighting and spot lighting in all areas including exterior walkways, porches, halls and stairways.
- Appliances. Front loading washer and dryer, side by side refrigerator, elevated dishwasher, and electric range with front controls will all help any individual while performing these daily activities.
- Safety Devices. Add smoke alarms, night lights, carbon monoxide detectors and install anti scald devices on all faucets. This will help avoid burning yourself with the hot water.
